Market statistics explained

Statistics only help if you know what they say. This guide explains the words you will meet on our market pages in plain language.

Average, median and why we prefer the median

The average adds all prices and divides by their number. One absurdly cheap or expensive ad moves it a lot. The median is the price in the middle when all prices are sorted: half are lower and half are higher. A few extreme ads do not change it, so it is a steadier picture of the market.

Percentiles and the range

The 25th percentile is the price below which a quarter of the ads fall; the 75th percentile is the price below which three quarters fall. The space between them is the range we show: the middle half of the market. Very low and very high ads are left out of it on purpose.

How firm is a figure?

We publish a figure only when enough priced ads stand behind it, so you never see a number built on a handful of ads. If you see “still collecting data”, that is the rule at work. We do not show how many ads are behind a figure; the reliability label next to it tells you how firm it is, and a word such as “very common” or “rare” tells you how widely a model is advertised.

Advertised price, not sold price

All prices are what sellers ask in public ads. Sellers expect to negotiate, so the price paid is usually lower. We do not know the final prices.

Ads, not cars

The same car can be advertised on several sites or more than once. Until duplicates are reliably recognised, our counts are counts of ads.

Popularity and demand

Where we show how common or how fast-moving a model is, we use relative bands (for example “high” or “medium”), not exact numbers. They compare models with each other and say nothing about one specific car.

Month by month

Statistics are calculated per calendar month from the ads that were active, and the month is shown on each page. Prices move with the season, fuel prices and new-car supply, so compare the same months when you look at a trend.

Where it stops

The statistics are informational. They are not a valuation, not an offer and not financial advice. The methodology page lists the sources and the limits in full.
